Poorly functioning vein valves lead to pressure buildup inside veins under the skin’s surface. The cause usually is a genetic predisposition, but other factors such as pregnancies, prolonged standing, hormonal fluctuations, and even wearing high-heeled shoes can all contribute to painful or visible veins.

What Are Varicose and Spider Veins?

Varicose and spider veins are common conditions, affecting people of all ages and from all types of backgrounds.

  • Varicose veins are larger, raised veins that often appear blue or purple in color. They are mostly found on the legs and can cause aching or cramping.
  • Spider veins are smaller, red, or blue veins that often appear in a web-like pattern. They can be found on the face or legs and are usually not painful.

Although varicose and spider veins can cause some health issues, many people choose to undergo treatments to create a more attractive look in the legs or face, or to resolve the pain associated with varicose veins.

Understanding The Difference Between Varicose And Spider Veins

Varicose veins:

Varicose veins may appear twisted or “ropey” and cause pain, swelling, heaviness, fatigue, itching, and restless legs. Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that usually occur on the legs. They often look like blue or purple squiggles just beneath the surface of the skin. In some cases, they can cause pain or other symptoms. Varicose veins occur when the valves in the veins weaken or become damaged. This allows blood to flow backward and pool in the vein, causing it to enlarge. Varicose veins are more common in women than men and are more likely to develop as you age.

Spider veins:

Spider veins are tiny, thin veins that can be seen just under the skin. They are usually blue or purple, and they often look like a spider's web. Spider veins are common, and they usually occur on the legs and face. While they are not dangerous, they can be bothersome and many wish to remove them for cosmetic reasons.
