Taking Care of Your Skin at Any Age - The Four Pillars of Protection
By Dr. Daniel Buscaglia – President & Medical Director, Board Certified Dermatologist & Phlebologist
Everyone knows that age plays a huge role in how your skin looks. But what does elude most of us is what to do about it. Keeping our skin wrinkle and crinkle free is not complicated if done correctly. The four pillars to keeping skin looking great at any age are sun protection, exfoliation, antioxidants, and collagen stimulation.
Sun exposure degenerates collagen and causes oxygen radicals that break down collagen. While the effects of sun exposure can bedelayed by a decade or two, they appear as sun induced wrinkles, capillary damage and freckling. While it is not always practical to just avoid the sun, sunscreen can provide the protection to block harmful rays of the sun. As a rule of thumb using sunscreen thatblocks both UVA and UVB rays with an SPF of 30 or better applied 15 minutes before sun exposure can make a significant difference.
Exfoliation removes the dead layer of skin cells that cling to the skin’s outermost surface. When done correctly, chemical exfoliation with a glycolic acid leaves the skin feeling smoother and fresher looking. Glycolic acid exfoliation can be used in different strengths to increase its effects. Improvements in fine lines; color and texture are cumulative and can often be appreciated after just a few treatments. Improvement can then be maintained through the continued use of home skin care products and monthly in-office facials.
One of the main culprits behind the aging process is oxidation, which is caused by free radicals. These free radicals destroy collagen. Antioxidants are substances that fight free radicals and prevent oxidation damage to cells. Some of the most well known topical antioxidants are vitamin A, vitamin C and a newly introduced substance made from a fine orange powder called idebenone, sold as Prevage. These topical antioxidants are the best way to get to the skin and halt the damage free radicals can do.
Aging of the skin shifts the balance between collagen production and breakdown leading to wrinkles, facial skin laxity and rough skin texture. Stimulation of collagen synthesis in aging skin is realistic and can substantially improve the appearance of fine lines with the use of Retin A, Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), growth factors and peptides which stimulate skin cells to produce collagen to reverse this process.
