What is the difference between varicose veins and spider veins?
Varicose Veins are engorged veins that appear as blue or skin colored bulges resembling cords or ropes on the skin surface. Varicose veins are often associated with swelling in the ankle area and can cause symptoms of heaviness in the legs that tends to be worse at the end of the day and better in the morning. Spider veins are the smaller, red, purple or blue lines on the very surface skin that can resemble streaks or “spiders”.
Q. What causes varicose veins and spider veins?
Varicose veins are caused by pressure in the legs due to weakened valves within the surface vein system. These valves function to prevent blood from flowing backwards with gravity as the blood moves up the legs towards the heart. People inherit this faulty valve tendency and with time, pressure builds and leads to the development of bugling varicose veins and red, purple or blue spider veins. Spider veins alone can also indicate valve problems within the surface vein system. Other factors that may contribute to spider and varicose vein development are hormone changes, pregnancy, standing occupations, chronic high heel use and sometimes injuries.
Q. Are varicose veins and spider veins dangerous?
Spider veins are usually a concern of appearance and not a medically worrisome. However, fifty percent of people with spider veins on their leg skin surface have underlying valve problems that may lead to worsening in what they see and feel. Rarely, varicose veins can lead to dermatitis, skin ulceration and increased risk for phlebitis and blood clots.
Q. How are varicose and spider veins diagnosed?
Vein problems are diagnosed primarily after a history and physical exam by a medical professional. Vein reflux is then confirmed by non-invasive ultrasound / sonogram testing. This test uses sound waves to create pictures of the veins and allows us to look at vein size and valve function.
