CoolSculpting works by slowly chilling the fat layer and inducing liquefaction of excess pockets of fat.  The treatment involves the placement of an index card sized applicator over the “bulge” via suction, followed by skin cooling that occurs slowly and gently over a 1-hour cycle.  Each cycle is able to target the equivalent of a “stick of butter” sized amount of fat, without harming the skin.

The treatment is virtually painless because the skin cooling acts as an anesthetic.  Patients are able to read, use their laptop or even watch a movie while having this treatment.  Although there can be temporary bruising in the treatment area and a few weeks of some numbness, patients can return to their normal routine immediately after.  No medications need to be started or stopped, no garments need to be worn, and patient’s can return to exercise that day.  Fat reduction is seen after only one treatment, but may take 2-3 months time to notice the full results.  Additional treatments would yield additive results.
